Sani Abacha was a military Head of State in Nigeria. In reflecting on history, the 1993 election alleged to have been won by MKO Abiola was annulled by the then military Head of State General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) who later handed over power to civilians through an interim government led by Ernest Shonekan.
In 1993, General Sani Abacha overthrew the interim government of Ernest Shonekan and returned the military to power which prompted his emergence as the Military Head of State.
His regime was one with many stories like lack of freedom of the press, human rights violations leading to international communities voicing their fear.
He was also a military dictator and governed Nigeria with an iron hand. It led to the arrest and imprisonment of notable Nigerians like the former military head of state His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo who later became president of Nigeria from 1999-2007. MKO Abiola the said winner of the 1993 Presidential election in Nigeria was equally arrested while other freedom fighters fled or went into self-exile to avoid being arrested, jailed or killed.
Abacha’s regime was also marked with mismanagement of public funds and even after his death, the revelation of money he looted became an open secret as many countries such as Switzerland, UK, USA have been returning the money he looted out of Nigeria tagged “Abacha’s loot”.
