Kano Shop Owners Decry Customs Extortion, Harassment

Kano, Nigeria – Shop owners in Kano’s bustling markets have petitioned the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) over alleged extortion and harassment by its officials. The traders claim that customs officers demand N500,000 per truckload of goods, crippling their businesses.

Allegations of Extortion

In a letter to the NCS, the Kano Traders Association alleged that customs personnel at checkpoints along Kano roads extort money from drivers conveying goods. The traders stated that officers claim the payments are for “clearance” and “documentation,” despite proper documentation.

“Customs officers stop our trucks, demanding N500,000 or more, threatening to seize goods if we don’t comply,” said Alhaji Musa, a trader. “This extortion has become unbearable, affecting our livelihoods.”

The association demands:

  1. Immediate stop to extortion and harassment.
  2. Investigation into alleged corrupt practices.
  3. Implementation of transparent clearance procedures.
