First Nigerian to Secure PhD in French language Dies

Professor Union Edebiri ( OFR) was the first Nigerian who was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree ( PhD) in French language and literature.

French communities, University of Benin, Edo State and Nigeria have lost an icon.

He lectured in the Department of Foreign Languages University of Benin, Benin City Edo State for many years and many scholars have passed through his mentorship. He was a friend to all and passionate about the success of students which made him to be a father to many and more than a teacher.

Professor Union Edebiri came from a peace-loving Family in Edo State and was born to the notable Edebiri family in Benin.

He also studied law and was called to the Nigeria Bar as an Attorney and Solicitor. His academic journey was not limited to French language and literature as he went further to study Law and became a legal practitioner.

Professor Union Edebiri was also given a national honour or award by the President of Nigeria. His academic prowess and contribution to the society earned him the National award of Officer of Federal Republic (OFR).

November 2023 will be remembered as the departure month of the academician and first PhD holder of the French language in the whole of Nigeria.
