Facts to Know About the New CBN Governor Nominee Dr Olayemi Michael Cardoso

The President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu upon assuming office 0n 29th of May 2023 sacked certain persons holding key positions in government establishments and Godwin Emefiele was affected which led to his suspension as CBN Governor since June 2023.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently nominated a new Governor of the apex bank in Nigeria which he has sent the name to the Senate for confirmation immediately the house reconvene after their recess.

Dr Olayemi Michael Cardoso will be replacing Godwin Emefiele as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria upon confirmation by the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly.

Before his nomination, he has served in both private and public sectors which makes up his professional careers. He is well educated to the extent of possessing doctor of Business Administration.

In 1976-1980, he studied and bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in Managerial and Administration studies from Aston University. After many years of his active career in private and public sectors respectively, he went back to school for his MSc where he studied Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School from 2004-2005. In the year 2007 he got his Doctor of Business Administration from the same school where he did his first degree program.

His professional career started with Citibank Nigeria in 1981 just immediately after his first degree program. It marked the commencement of his banking career and he worked there from 1981 – 1990 before moving to Citizens International Bank as an executive director. He left the bank in 1997 and became a principal partner at FBC Associates till he was appointed as Commissioner in the Ministry of Economic, Planning and Budget, Lagos State during the regime of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Governor of Lagos State. He held the position till 2005 where he got a board seat in Chevron Oil Plc as a board member from 2005- 2008.

World Bank made him the Chairman of LMDGP Project from 2005-2013, which was a position he held while performing his board role in Chevron Oil Plc.

His commitment and passion for education also earned him Board member of Harvard Kennedy School from 2008-2014 and also Lagos business school too.

In 2010 he became the Chairman of Citi Nigeria which became a position he held till the year 2022.

In September 2023, he was nominated as the Governor of the apex bank in Nigeria which he will serve for the five years first term as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) upon confirmation by the Senate.
