Edo State House of Assembly Impeaches Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu

Edo State House of Assembly (ESHA) on Monday 8th April 2024 impeached the deputy Governor of Edo State Comrade Philip Shaibu.

Philip Shaibu ran a joint ticket with Governor Godwin Obaseki as the running mate of the latter in two elections of first and second tenure for the office of the executive Governor of Edo State.

Shaibu was a member of All Progressive Congress (APC) where he was first elected deputy Governor after the victory of APC in their first tenure before moving to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) alongside his principal Governor Obaseki where they contested under the platform of the party for 2020 Edo State Governorship election.

Recall that Shaibu and Obaseki relationship fell apart after the general elections in 2023 where the Governor accused Shaibu of trying to carry a coup on him by seeking to elect a speaker of the house of Assembly different from the choice of the Governor.

Governor Obaseki earlier relocated the office of the deputy Governor of Edo State out from Government house of the state to a new location.

In the build up of political parties primary elections ahead of Edo State Governorship election in 2024, Philip Shaibu declared interest to contest for the office of the Governor of the State as the flag bearer of PDP but failed to secure the support and full backing of Governor Obaseki.

Philip Shaibu had earlier ran to the court to secure a judgement that would have stopped any impeachment process from the state house of assembly but the rulings didn’t go in his Favour as the state house of Assembly under an investigative committee found Deputy Governor Shaibu guilty of the impeachment allegations levelled against him.

Following the concluded impeachment process, Edo State Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu was impeached as the deputy Governor of the State and ceases to serve in the capacity of that office in a few months to the completion of tenure of office.
