Delay in Enugu State LGA Election Fan Caretaker Committee

Enugu State has a total of seventeen Local Government Areas that make up the State which bothers Anambra, Ebonyi Kogi and Benue State.

The previous administration under the leadership of Former Governor Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi from Udenu LGA conducted elections into the council areas which their office will expire in the first quarter of the year 2024.

Citizens in the State have been expecting a possible election for the office of the Local Government Area Chairmen and Councillors of the various wards in the State but in a letter shared by Mr Ugwuoke Michael Onyemaechi on his Facebook page, it was discovered that the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ESIEC) which is a body saddled with the responsibility of conducting elections in the Local Government Areas in the State has been told to make adjustments in the timetable of the LGA election following a court order.

According to the public notice of the Enugu State of Nigeria gazette dated 9th January 2024 following a High Court judgment delivered by His Lordship Honourable Justice C.O Ajah (PhD), the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission(ESIEC) announced that the election billed to hold on 24th February 2024 has been shifted to 5th day of October 2024.

The adjustment in the Election calendar for the 17 LGA in Enugu State may lead to the State Government led by His Excellency Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to appoint Transition Chairmen or Caretaker Committee members into the various LGA after the expiration of the office of the council chairmen elected through an election conducted during the tenure of the former Executive Governor of the State.

Political parties and candidates that are preparing to participate in the election are drawn into attention to take note of the public notice pertaining to the election as signed by Dr Mike Ajogwu SAN who is the Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission.
