The Igbo apex group known as Ohanaeze ndi Igbo organized Igbo Day on Friday 29th September 2023 at Okpara Square, Independence Layout Enugu State.
The Igbo day was attended by many illustrious sons and daughters of Igbo land from the five states in the South East region and other Igbo-speaking communities in other states.
The Governor of Enugu State His Excellency Peter Ndubuisi Mbah spoke extensively in ways he portrayed a development agenda that can connect States in the South East as one. He also called for unity and for Igbos to think home and bring back their resources to develop the South East. He thanked the President General of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide Engr Iwuanyanwu for his good leadership and for achieving the celebration of Igbo day within the short period he took over as leader of the Igbo apex group.
In attendance again was the Governor of Anambra State His Excellency Charles Chukwuma Soludo the son of Mgbafor. He also gave a speech where he thanked the Governor of Enugu State firstly for his hospitality. He also said that Enugu is his home equally because Enugu is the political capital of Igbo land. He equally called the Governor of Enugu State his landlord as he said he has had a house in Enugu State since 1999. Soludo went extensively to say that the State creation is a new thing to him in grouping Igbos according to States. He said it was not like that before and Igbos should embrace unity irrespective of differences in State of origin. Speaking further, he eulogies Michael I. Okpara for his development agenda and calls for the master plan of M.I. Okpara to be sustained.
In attendance again was the Governor of Ebonyi State His Excellency Francis Nwaifuru who was ably represented by his Deputy Governor. In the speech of the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, she called for calm in the South East and the end of any activities that pose a hindrance to the economic development of the South East. She also said that nobody is happy that Maazi Nnamdi Kanu is still not walking free and assured that Stakeholders are making efforts to ensure the release of the IPOB Leader. At the end of his remarks, she said Ebonyi is now a great State and people should visit Ebonyi to testify in ways she deployed exaggeration to state that a visit to Ebonyi will make visitors consider living permanently in the State.
In attendance also was the wife of Igbo leader Amb. Bianca Ojukwu who is also the daughter of the former Governor of Old Anambra State C.C. Onoh from Ngwo Enugu State.
Igbos that have contributed to the development of Igbo land were awarded in recognition of their sacrifices.
Other people that attended are the former Governor of Anambra State and former Minister of Labour Sen. Chris Ngige, traditional rulers, Ohaneze F.C.T Abuja, Nollywood actors from south-east and Igbo groups drawn from many places.
