In a move reflecting Ghana’s deepening engagement with East Asia, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Mr. Kojo Choi, a businessman of Korean descent, as Ghana’s new Ambassador‑Designate to the Republic of South Korea.
The announcement, formalized in a statement signed by Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama, follows consultations with the Council of State. The selection of Choi is seen as part of the administration’s strategic effort to refresh the country’s diplomatic outreach under its current foreign policy agenda
Kojo Choi (born Choi Seung Eub) relocated from South Korea to Ghana at age 14, later becoming a naturalized Ghanaian citizen. Educated at SOS College in Tema and the University of Ghana (Legon), he earned a degree in Business Administration in 2002
Choi brings over two decades of leadership experience in fintech, telecommunications, marketing, and business consulting across Ghana and West Africa. He is the founder of PaySwitch Limited, a licensed third-party payment processor for Visa, MasterCard, UnionPay, and Ghana’s major mobile money operators. The company is certified under ISO 27001 and PCI DSS standards
According to the news report by Pulse Ghana, he has also worked as a consultant for the Korean Embassy in Ghana and for leading multinational firms operating in both countries, positioning him as a cultural and business bridge between Ghana and South Korea. Outside of corporate ventures, Choi is active in the arts sector through initiatives like Art Africa Gallery in Osu, Accra, which promotes artistic exchange and cultural diplomacy
Following further report by Pulse Ghana, the appointment has triggered a blend of commendation and scrutiny. Supporters praise Choi’s bicultural experience and network as valuable assets for strengthening bilateral ties. Critics have questioned the transparency of the selection process and whether dual heritage raises eligibility issues
Analysts interpret Choi’s nomination as a broader signal of Ghana’s desire to enhance partnerships in trade, technology, education, and cultural exchange with South Korea, with approval of the appointment expected to open avenues for stronger commercial and diplomatic engagement.
Mr. Kojo Choi is currently Ambassador‑Designate pending parliamentary approval. If confirmed, he will become Ghana’s official diplomatic representative in Seoul, South Korea tasked with deepening Ghana–South Korea relations across multiple sectors.
