Residents of Lugbe, Abuja, are reeling from a contentious land allocation and demolition that has left hundreds homeless. Recently, Governor Nyesom Wike allocated the disputed land to Radcom Nigeria Limited, sparking outrage among affected residents.
Background of the Dispute
The CRD Lugbe residents have been embroiled in a long-standing dispute with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and private estate developers. The residents claim that the FCDA, in collaboration with developers, has been harassing and intimidating them to vacate their properties. The CRD layout, established in 1996, was designed to resettle persons affected by the dualization and expansion of the Airport Road.
Demolition and Alleged Collusion
In February 2024, residents woke up to demolition notices posted by individuals claiming to be from the Development Control Department. The notices stated a 21-day deadline for demolition to pave the way for a Central Market. Residents allege that FCDA officials and private developers are colluding to dispossess them of their properties.
Residents’ Plea
The CRD Residents and Landlords Association has appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the FCT Minister to intervene, citing the potential for a multi-dimensional crisis. Residents have lost confidence in the Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, who they claim has failed to provide evidence of the redesigned CRD layout or disclose when the redesign occurred.
As the situation unfolds, affected residents urge the government to address their concerns and protect their rights. The allocation of the Lugbe land to Radcom Nigeria Limited has only added fuel to the fire, exacerbating tensions between residents, developers, and government agencies.
