The legal battle for the true winner of March 2023 Governorship Election in Kano State marked a final end point on Friday 12th January 2024 following the judgment delivered by the apex court in Nigeria.
The incumbent Governor of Kano State His Excellency Abba Yusuf was sacked by the election petition tribunal and Appeal Court in a separate judgment delivered in 2023. The Governor and his legal team approached the Supreme Court to file an appeal to challenge the judgment of the lower court that ruled in favour of the candidate of the All Progressive Congress(APC) in the said election.
Abba Yusuf contested for the office of the Kano State Governor under the platform of his party NNPP and was declared the winner of the election by the electoral umpire in Nigeria.
The candidate of APC approached the election petition tribunal seeking to challenge the victory of His Excellency Abba Yusuf in the election. The former got a favourable judgment in the election petition tribunal and Appeal Court where he was declared the winner of the March 2023 Governorship Election in Kano State.
Supreme Court on Friday 12th January 2024 reversed the judgment of the lower courts and affirmed Governor Abba Yusuf and his party NNPP as the winner of the election.
The judgment of the apex court in Nigeria has enabled NNPP to retain Kano State as one out of the thirty-six states the party-sponsored candidate is occupying the office of the Governor.
