Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has lambasted Kemi Badenoch, the newly elected leader of the UK Conservative Party, for her disparaging comments about Nigeria. Speaking at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue in Abuja, Shettima expressed disappointment over Badenoch’s remarks, saying she has the right to her opinions, but also has the option to “remove the Kemi from her name”.
Shettima emphasized Nigeria’s significance on the global stage, highlighting that one in every three or four black men is a Nigerian. He also noted that by 2050, Nigeria will be the third most populous nation on earth, supporting the United States.
Badenoch, a UK member of parliament of Nigerian descent, had previously accused Nigerian politicians of misappropriating public funds in 2022. Following her election as the UK Conservative Party leader in November 2024, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) reached out to her office but received no response.
Shettima’s comments reflect the Nigerian government’s commitment to protecting the country’s image and promoting national pride. The Vice President’s statement has sparked a heated debate about national identity, diaspora relations, and the responsibilities of public figures.
