The Kano State Executive Council has approved ₦14.8 billion for a series of developmental projects aimed at improving healthcare, infrastructure, and energy supply across the state.
The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategies, Ibrahim Garba Waiya, disclosed the approvals while briefing journalists on Friday in Kano, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Major Health Sector Allocations
The largest share of the funding will target healthcare facilities, with ₦364 million earmarked for the renovation and rehabilitation of the Sabo Bakin Zuwo Maternity Hospital in Jakara. Another ₦294 million is allocated for the general renovation of infrastructure at the School of Health Technology, Bebeji.
Waiya added that ₦113 million will be spent on installing solar energy systems at five maternity facilities, while over ₦112 million will go toward the supply of drugs and consumables to Hasiya Bayero, Murtala Muhammad, and Yadakunya hospitals.
The government also approved ₦272 million for the renovation of a newly procured building at Zango Quarters within the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. The Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital will get ₦128 million for working materials for two renovated wards, while ₦379 million is set aside for the renovation and expansion of the Zakirai Primary Health Care Centre.
Energy and Infrastructure Boost
Beyond healthcare, the council approved ₦310 million for the purchase of 120,000 litres of diesel and 17,000 litres of petrol for February 2025. In the water resources sector, ₦169 million was approved for the rehabilitation of five mini earth dams in Madobi, Gwarzo, Garun Malam, Kibiya, and Ajingi.
Supplementary Budget Ratified
In addition to capital projects, the council ratified a ₦889.2 billion supplementary and amendment budget for 2025 an increase of ₦169.5 billion from the previously approved ₦719.7 billion.
Waiya said the supplementary appropriation is designed to “strengthen the capacity of the government to deliver on its core mandates and meet emerging obligations.” The budget will be forwarded to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative approval.
Broader Development Context
This is the second major round of project approvals by the Ganduje administration this year. In July 2025, the council approved over ₦69 billion for infrastructure, education, healthcare, and humanitarian support, according to Premium Times. Key projects included the rehabilitation of RMK Flyover, IBB Road, and Kofar Mazugal Junction, as well as the construction of 10 pedestrian bridges at strategic locations across Kano.
Why It Matters
Kano, Nigeria’s most populous state, faces significant pressure on public infrastructure and social services due to rapid urbanisation and a high birth rate. Analysts say the new allocations, particularly in healthcare and water resources, could help improve quality of life for millions of residents but the impact will depend heavily on project execution and transparency.
