FG Removes UNIZIK VC & Dissolves Governing Council

In a letter dated 20th November 2024 from the Federal Ministry of Education through the office of the Director of Press and Public Relations Mr Boriowo Folasade, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka Anambra State.

The Honourable Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa also revealed the fate of the newly appointed VC and announced Prof. Bernard Odoh’s removal as the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State.

In the letter, it was stated that the chairman of the Governing Council of UNIZIK appointed a Vice Chancellor who did not meet the minimum criteria for the position, insinuating that the newly appointed VC, Prof Bernard Odo, lacked eligibility for the said position.

Members of the Governing Council affected by the dissolution of the Council are:

Amb. Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe – Pro Chancellor

Hon Hafiz Oladejo – Council Member

Hon Augustine Onyedebelu

Engr Amioleran Osahon

Rtd Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin

Federal Government of Nigeria stated that the institution’s Governing Council breached the law governing the University including disregard of directives from the Federal Ministry of Education which necessitated the intervention of the Honourable Minister of Education to put measures in place to prevent further escalation of the situation which could destabilize the said University as a result of the illegal decisions made the Governing Council.

Federal Government of Nigeria announced that an acting Vice Chancellor will be appointed in accordance with the founding act of UNIZIK and a new Governing Council will be constituted as soon as possible to drive proper governance and respect for the law.

The dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and the removal of the newly appointed Vice Chancellor takes effect immediately according to the trending press release from the Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria.
