Federal Government Launches Tuition-Free Training Programme to Upskill Nigeria’s Technical Teachers

The Federal Ministry of Education has officially announced the launch of the 2025/2026 Technical Teachers Training Programme (TTTP), a tuition-free, one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) initiative aimed at transforming technical and vocational education across Nigeria.

The announcement, made through the Department of Technology and Science Education in Abuja, underscores the government’s renewed commitment to revitalising Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) — a critical sector for building a skilled, future-ready workforce.

According to the ministry’s statement reported by Vanguard and confirmed via the Ministry’s official channels, the programme is designed to re-energise technical education by providing public secondary school teachers handling technical and vocational subjects with up-to-date pedagogical and industry-relevant skills. By strengthening teacher capacity, the government hopes to produce graduates who are not only employable but also equipped to meet the demands of modern industries.

The application portal for this transformative programme opens on 8 July 2025 and closes on 21 July 2025.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible candidates must currently teach technical or vocational subjects in public secondary technical schools or colleges and have at least five years of service left before retirement. Applicants are also required to present a recent medical report confirming their fitness to participate.

Why This Matters

Education experts and stakeholders have praised the initiative as a crucial step toward addressing Nigeria’s persistent skills gap. “By investing directly in the teachers, the government is investing in the backbone of our technical education system,” said Dr. Olufemi Adedayo, an education policy analyst, in an interview with The Guardian Nigeria.

Industry leaders believe that well-trained technical teachers are essential to building a strong pipeline of innovators and skilled workers needed to drive Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.

This programme not only promises to uplift the standard of teaching but also signals a commitment to empowering young Nigerians with practical, industry-ready skills — a necessary move for a country aiming to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global economy.
