The remains of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Army Staff, have arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The late general’s body was received by soldiers from the Guards Brigade, who were present to pay their final respects.
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56, after a brief illness. His death was announced amidst speculation surrounding his health, as he had not made a public appearance since September.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has expressed his condolences, praising Lagbaja’s contributions to Nigeria’s efforts to end the war against insurgency and banditry. The governor noted that the country would miss the rich experience and leadership of the late general.
Lagbaja’s Legacy
During his tenure as Chief of Army Staff, Lagbaja played a crucial role in several military operations, including Operation Harmony IV in Bakassi Peninsula and the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC). He was also instrumental in the fight against Boko Haram and other security challenges in Nigeria.
The late general is survived by his wife, Mariya Abiodun-Lagbaja, and three children. His legacy as a dedicated and accomplished military leader will be remembered and honored by Nigerians and the international community.
