Agriculture as Enabler for Mankind Survival

Many people have been asking if there are beings who do not need food to survive or stay healthy,
researchers have tried to find the alternative but in reality, agriculture continues to be powerful.

Many nations that have gone to war without factoring in food supply may have lost their wars because of starvation and not necessarily because of insufficient ammunition to wage war. It has shown the importance of food for man and animals.

Yes, even animals eat to stay alive pending when they die or are slaughtered for meat consumption or industrial use. Nations that have food security wield huge power and can achieve a whole lot. It is also true that many nations have limited land and rely on food importation to survive. The nightmare of limited land is part of what prompted soilless farming, sack farming and other innovations in agribusiness.

Food being a product of agriculture emphasizes the need to embrace the agriculture sector either for commercial purposes or consumption.

Agriculture companies like Romat Agrotech Ltd are into full commercial agriculture in line with
sustainable development goals that say zero hunger, good health and well-being, decent work and
economic growth, responsible consumption and production, and partnerships for the goals.

In countries or States with limited lands which do not encourage agriculture due to other reasons like
residential purposes, agricultural products are brought from other places to serve the huge market, in
cities, there is a huge population which means higher food consumption. Food product prices are always
higher in cities or places that have limited supply.

It also depends on purchasing power, agriculture products are numerous and what can be found in a particular state will be needed in another state which means that nature has a way of rationing things to encourage intra and inter-trade in the supply chain.

If you find who has not eaten food before then that must be a miracle because even people who fast for
religious reasons have a limited time or break period in between the fasting just to stay healthy. Many
nongovernmental organizations or Not for profit organizations that specialize in providing food products
for the less privileged in the society rely on Agriculture companies like Romat Agrotech Ltd which supplies them bulk agriculture products such as rice, maize, beans, garri, palm oil, groundnut oil and many more.
In the Sustainable Development Goal Nine says industry, innovation and infrastructure, jobs have been
created through industrialization. Many Countries or States that lack certain agricultural raw materials
have industries owned by private companies and the government which gathers raw materials from
agriculture and refines them into different finished products, Romat Agrotech Ltd (member of Romat Group) supplies such companies with the needed raw materials for industrial production.

Fruits like bananas, apples, oranges, mangoes, paw-paw etc can be transformed into juice for consumption. That’s the good work of agricultural products and industrialization. Breakfast is served because of the different transformations that started from agricultural raw materials, lunch and dinner all owe gratitude to the wonders of agriculture.

The product varieties from agriculture have made mankind have choices, in certain places, there are
some foods or animals that are considered unsafe or a sacrilege for consumption. It has to do with their
tradition or religion. There is still an abundance of other products and the ones they don’t eat are not heavily missed. Nature has blessed mankind with enough varieties of agricultural products considered safe for consumption.

Countries also have ways of regulating the industrial production of certain goods just to ensure
that people don’t consume products that are considered dangerous and hazardous. In a country like
Nigeria, the National Agency for Food, Drug and Administration Control (NAFDAC) issues unique numbers to manufacturing companies that are in the production of edible and consumer goods. Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) also enforces compliance with quality/standards. It is not enough to manufacture goods and flood them everywhere in the market. Standard must be there and quality when sacrificed attracts punishment.

When the importance of agricultural products is discussed and analyzed, you will be wondering if
truly some people don’t eat food despite warnings to eat healthy and safe. While food is cheap in some
places, it can be expensive in some other places especially where such crops are not cultivated or limited
space for the rearing of animals.

In Nigeria, there are many lands in the northern part of the country that are fertile for agricultural
products. Many food products come from there while other agriculture products like Palm oil are more in
South East and South- South region in the country. Other regions still have huge agricultural products for
commercial and subsistence purposes. States that are surrounded by water have limited land availability
due to residential reasons and industrialization, products come from other locations while they sell what
they have too which brings merchant to their side.

In the olden days when trade by barter existed, people traded one commodity for another commodity but after the coming of the Europeans in Nigeria and other African countries, the cash system replaced barter trade. In other words, buying and selling will require an exchange of money. The buyer brings money in exchange for the goods while the seller receives the money and lets go of the goods purchased by the buyer. The money value has initiated new ownership and till this day food products are taken from the place of abundance to where it is been lacking or scarce for transaction purposes.

Since no state or nation has it all, agribusiness will continue to thrive because agricultural products are needed for consumption and for industrial purposes.

In a country like Nigeria, the government has continued to advocate for more investment in agriculture because of its importance despite the oil discovery that reduced the
productive sector in agriculture.

Some companies through private and public partnerships are contributing highly to food production for sustainability.

Ironically, some smaller countries with limited lands have exported agricultural products more than other
countries with vast lands. Certain things can discourage investment in Agriculture which could be
insecurity, policies, markets, transportation, bad road networks, storage facilities, preservation, capital and
access to modern tools.
