Enugu State has once again taken the spotlight in Nigeria’s national service narrative as Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the state.
In an exclusive development, Governor Mbah on Tuesday received the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, and his team at the Government House, Enugu, where he unveiled the far-reaching reforms his government has already implemented to transform the welfare and experience of corps members.
The Governor reminded his guests of Enugu’s historic role in the life of the NYSC, proudly recalling that Awgu Local Government Area hosted the scheme’s very first orientation camp back in 1973. He said his administration is currently revamping the Awgu camp not only to modernize its facilities but also to restore its symbolic place in Nigeria’s youth integration journey.
“NYSC is one of the most enduring bridges that link our young people across culture, faith, and region,” Governor Mbah declared. “Enugu will always remain a strong partner in nurturing that vision.”
A Bold Step in Corps Members’ Welfare
Perhaps the most striking highlight of the Governor’s remarks was the unprecedented upward review of allowances for corps members in Enugu. Until recently, corps members in the state received as little as N1,000 per month from the state government ,a figure that many considered both inadequate and demoralizing.
Governor Mbah changed that. Today, under his leadership, corps doctors earn N80,000 monthly, pharmacists N50,000, other healthcare professionals N40,000, while every other corps member receives a minimum of N20,000 in addition to the Federal Government allowance.
“This is not charity; it is recognition,” the Governor stressed. “Corps members bring immense value to our schools, hospitals, and communities. For us, it is a duty to ensure they feel safe, valued, and supported.”
Commendations from the NYSC DG
Brig. Gen. Nafiu, visibly impressed by the Governor’s reforms, lauded Enugu as one of the most corps-friendly states in the country. He commended the administration’s strides in prioritizing safety, welfare, and improved living conditions for young Nigerians deployed to the state.
Enugu Sets a National Standard
With its bold policies on corps members’ welfare and its effort to modernize historic NYSC infrastructure, Enugu under Governor Mbah is fast setting a national benchmark.
Beyond the allowances and infrastructure, the Governor emphasized his broader vision: making Enugu a place where corps members can thrive, contribute meaningfully, and leave with fond memories.
“Together,” he said, “we will keep building stronger bonds and shaping a brighter future for our nation.”
Silvercloud Media can confirm that the reforms currently being implemented in Enugu have already sparked discussions among corps members nationwide, with many describing the Governor’s policies as “life-changing” and “a model for other states to follow.”
