The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and gotten through the official and verified X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Government of Nigeria.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo stated that the holiday is dedicated to commemorating the life and service of the late Buhari, who passed away in London.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General, previously served as Nigeria’s Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Former President Buhari made history by defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general elections, marking Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another where a sitting president accepted defeat, choosing the path of peace. He completed two terms in office and was succeeded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Lagos State, South-West Nigeria.
Late Former President Buhari hailed from Daura in Katsina State, located in the North-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. His leadership legacy and contributions to the nation remain subjects of national reflection as the country prepares to observe the public holiday in his memory
