Obasanjo Urges African Youths to Leverage AI for Career Growth and Continent’s Development

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the importance of African youths embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost their careers and contribute to the continent’s advancement. This call to action comes as Africa positions itself at the forefront of a transformative moment that could reshape its development trajectory.

The African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) is already working towards fostering talent in responsible AI and Machine Learning (ML) in African public universities through the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) Africa Scholarship Programme. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for research and development in AI and ML on the continent.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Responsible AI Innovation: Encouraging research projects on sustainable development, gender equity, and regional distribution in low-income countries.
  • Capacity Building: Enhancing the capacities of existing ICT departments to offer MSc and PhD programs in AI and ML.
  • Networking Opportunities: Providing platforms for AI and ML scholars to connect and collaborate.

By embracing AI, African youths can unlock new opportunities for career growth and contribute to the continent’s development. As the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population, Africa’s youth will form one of the world’s largest workforces by 2030.

Organizations like the YFLab team are also working to equip youths with AI skills through mentorship programs, training workshops, and access to AI resources. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa has also launched initiatives like the Youth Innovators Design Bootcamp to expose youths to the latest advancements in AI and other fourth industrial revolution technologies.

As Africa harnesses the power of AI, the continent is poised for transformative growth and development. Will you be part of this revolution?
